Alright… who has seen Curious George? If I were to guess, probably everybody! Well, in our house George is playing on Netflix on a pretty regular basis. Like, say.. everyday. 😉 Eli looooves George! And, quite frankly, so do my husband and I! Now granted, we probably have our own reasons for enjoying this show. But, let me share with you one of mine.
This is going to sound crazy to some of you. But, The Man with the Yellow Hat actually helps me be a better mom. Seriously.. follow me here.
Have you ever studied his demeanor? His responses. His wisdom. It doesn’t matter what sweet little George does, “the Man” NEVER gets upset. He never gets angry. And, he certainly never yells at George.
Now, how does that compare to you and me? (Blush) Yeah, I know. Sometimes it is SO hard to not get upset, impatient and use loud tones. (i.e. YELL)
But, we all know this is NOT the behavior we want to teach our children. So, it is ever so important to keep ourselves under control and exhibit a good example.
How do I do this? Well, first and foremost, by the grace of God.
Coming in second though, and I believe God has inspired me with this connection…. is asking myself, how would the Man with the Yellow Hat respond to this?
Very simply. He would take a deep breath. Maybe even a gulp. Quickly compose himself and then proceed to teach George a lesson while fixing the situation. It’s never a big deal. It doesn’t’ matter if George turns the WHOLE house upside down, looking for a cricket. Or attempts to build an igloo indoors, which eventually floods the bottom floor of the house.
It’s all good.
Well, I believe we can translate this into reality. The next time your little one throws away your expensive makeup, your long list to the grocery store or tries to wash your shoes in the bathtub, don’t yell. In fact, don’t even act like it’s a big deal. Because quite honestly, if something won’t matter in 5 years, it’s NOT a big deal.
Instead, take a deep breath, have your child look directly at you and calmly explain where these items belong. Or fill in the blank to the situation. And, proceed from there…
(As you can see, I’m talking to myself. ;))
Now, what about you.. Do you have any quirky ways to keep yourself under control when your kids do something wild?! I’d love to hear your stories!!

We love Curious George at our house! I hadn’t really thought about The Man with the Yellow Hat in terms of parenting before, but you’ve piqued my curiosity. I’ll have to pay attention to that the next time we watch. Fun post!
