[pinit]I still remember the first time somebody asked me if I had any goals. I was 23 years old and my response was… “Well I’ve never really been a goal oriented person.” The truth was that nobody had ever taught me to set goals or even told me why they are important. I did not know that wherever the mind goes, the body will follow. I did not know that what we think about, we bring about. I did not know that the Bible says, without a vision, people perish.
Once I began studying this subject, it quickly became obvious to me that I must decide where I’m going in life, or somebody else will.
So that one conversation launched me into a whole new way of thinking. I began learning from super successful people that not only owned their own businesses, but were thriving in every area of life. They had several things in common, but the one we’re discussing today is goals. They were all a product of their goals. Not one of them had just stumbled upon their success.
They set measurable goals, set a game plan and then backed it up with action.
Sounds simple right?
Not so much.
I find that all too often, people dive right into the “game plan” (i.e. action steps) and they lose sight of the big picture, only to find themselves trudging along aimlessly. They’re happily checking off their lists every day, but they aren’t making any progress because their mind is focused on the activity, not the end goal. And, whatever we focus on is manifested in our life. So, if you focus on the “activity”, what will you get more of? More things to do. You must never lose sight of the vision.
Wikipedia defines a goal as: a desired result that a person or a system envisions, plans and commits to achieve.
So, how do we know if we are setting a “Goal” or simply just making a “Checklist”? Ask yourself… is this really what I want? Is this the outcome I am looking to achieve? Or is this simply just a step along the way?
That being said, I quickly became frustrated with my last two posts on “Weekly Goals”. I found it to be extremely boring and too much emphasis was put on the “Checklist”. So, I am going to halt that series of posts until I come up with a satisfactory way to revamp it! So stay tuned for more on this topic! 😉
And, in the meantime, please feel free to share any insight you have on goal setting. 🙂
